Xplorer - Beta Testing

BETA VERSION 99.20

The XPLORER Mapping App is now ready for wider Beta testing and is available in Apple (iOS) and Android versions.

Below, you will find brief instructions for both platforms.

Our deployment strategy is for a soft launch initially, with an increasing number of beta testers in the first 2-3 weeks, whilst we iron out any last, big gremlins – and then to shout about it loud !

APPLE

In Brief –

  • Download “Test Flight” (Apple’s beta platform)
  • Download the Xplorer App
  • Login (we’ll be invited to set up and account – email/password
  • Download some base mapping and then local mapping (e.g. OS 1:25k). (We can set you up with extra “Tokens” when required)
  • Enjoy.

In more detail - On the iPhone or iPad (or both) that you intend to use – please navigate to this link :

https://testflight.apple.com/join/6EtI7XFF

  • This will allow you to download Apple’s TEST FLIGHT beta testing platform.
  • TEST FLIGHT should “know” that you (or your phone at least) are there to test the XPLORER App.
  • On TEST FLIGHT - Press the “Install” button – and 45 seconds or so later the XPLORER icon should be installed on your phone (it may well be on the last page of all your Apps). Open the App.
  • N.B. XPLORER uses account details and credentials from the Satmap online mapping tool XPEDITION2, where it will store all your route data and derive the global snap-to-route functionality. We did this to reduce the number of different logins across our platforms and to access server powerful server functions, and as a common store for all a User’s track and route data.
  • To use XPLORER fully, you’ll just need to set up a user name and password on XPEDITION2, if you don’t already have one. However you can easily do that from the XPLORER login prompt.
  • Once XPLORER is logged in – just for the first time, you will be invited to download
    • World Base Maps, and then your
    • Country Base Maps – this process should take less than a couple of minutes on a good connection.
  • As Beta Testers, we have allocated you 1,000 Tokens (Mapping Credits), to spend as you wish. (Approx. £10 worth in real money).
  • For your initial testing, we have however reduced the price of the Satmap Full GB Adventure Map (1:25k) to 1,000 tokens , and each of the sub-regions to 250 Tokens. These prices will revert once the beta testing phase is complete.
  • We’d suggest that you get started by downloading small MapPacks of your local area, to spread your “test tokens” as far as possible.
  • We are still working on the Quick Start Guide – however, we also need the App to be as intuitive as possible.
  • From our Admin panel we can allocate more tokens to Beta Testing, if needed – within the bounds of reasonable allocations for software development, as far as Ordnance Survey is concerned.
  • If you need more tokens for testing – please just e-mail us.
  • Finally – we really appreciate your feedback on any XPLORER topic – but especially :
    • Intuitive User Interface / Ease of Use,
    • Unexpected crashes / software freezes,
    • Failed map downloads / map lists not making sense,
    • Strange functionality,
    • Things that simply don’t make any sense / seem too complicated !
  • ENJOY.

ANDROID

In more detail -

  • Access the Google PLAY Store on your phone / tablet.

  • Search for “Satmap

  • You should find the XPLORER App there, for Beta testing.

USAGE NOTES (Both Platforms)

  • Hamburger Menu (top left) – has a lot of quick access links to common functions.

  • Please note the difference between the map modes : “GPS MAP” (you are centred in the middle) – and PLANNING mode (cross hairs visible – when you are looking elsewhere on the mapping)

  • YOU ARE HERE button (bottom left) gets you back to the GPS MAP screen from most other places in the software.

  • MAPS – generally can be :

    • INSTALLED (you own them and they are installed on this device)

    • OWNED (You own the map – but it is not necessarily installed – to save storage space. Tal the map title to see more details. If it is not already on your device – then just download it.

    • SUBSCRIBED (Sometimes a cheaper way to access maps – a 1-year subscription for certain map types)

    • AVAILABLE (The whole Satmap map catalogue – listed by country – some of which you may own , and may be installed. Tap the map title for more details)

  • Download / Network Connections – you’ll need a reasonable network connection to download big MapPack (there’s a lot of quality data to get across to your device. Typically MapPacks are 3-5 GB, but the biggies can go to 40 – 70 GB. There may be some tough decisions between maps, photos and music storage! The good news with XPLORER is that you can unload mapping and reload later when you need that specific map coverage.

  • GPX Routes / Tracks – XPLORER supports the GPS format in the first instance. As such it sticks to the original design intent

    • GPX Routes are something you PLAN to do (points have Lat/Lon/Elevation and little else – NO historical data – and are fairly skinny files)

    • GPX Tracks are something you HAVE done (points have Lat/Lon/Elevation/Time and possibly a bunch of other stuff; heart rate, cadence, bike power, etc. etc – and are fairly fat files)

    • Many other devices are less strict with the way these file types are used (Garmin seem to use GPX Tracks for everything !)

    • To load a file and use it for navigation XPLORER needs it to be in the GPX Route format. If you can’t get a file working – then you may need to EDIT / Convert Track to Route, in the Routes and Tracks folder.

    • XPLORER tends to focus one Route at a time for navigation purposes – so your chosen route needs to be “ACTIVTED” – follow the buttons for “Activate” and “Deactivate” Routes.
