Just back from our trip to the mountains of Morocco. It’s nearly thirty years since I last mountain biked there. Some things were just as I remembered, others changed. The donkey tracks to the mountain villages still had some superb riding (and occasionally dreadful). The people were friendly, but no longer were we an oddity with groups gathering when we stopped. Nearly every village was adorned with satellite dishes and it seemed every other person was on their mobile phone. We knew we were in the ‘tourist’ areas when the mint tea was served with its traditional sugar ‘on the side’ – not the Moroccan way! Exploring new trails was exciting as ever – sometimes a great descent was discovered, sometimes we had to push and carry, or admit defeat and turn around. None of these trails are marked on the map, but our Active 20 was able to give us our location and a feel for the topography – so we were never lost, just improvising and discovering our way.
I need to make sure I return soon, there’s years more great riding to find in the Atlas mountains!
