Can I plan routes on my PC?

Planning routes on your PC is easy and can be done using our own browser based software Satmap Xpedition. Satmap has free online planning with topographical mapping and is usable by almost any computer. Xpedition users can download routes in GPX format on the Active 12 or other GPS unit that supports GPX (such as Active 20). Routes can also be shared and paper copies of map tiles, elevation profile and the Route Card can be printed off. Routes in GPX format from other sources can also be uploaded onto Xpedtion.

Without using Xpedition, route planning can be done with third party PC map systems. Satmap provides no guarantees that we support all third party systems, however Satmap GPS devices can use any of the following formats:

  • .GPX
  • .KML
  • .KMZ
  • .LOC
  • .ZIP
  • .TXT
  • .PNG
  • .XOL
  • .TCX
  • .JPG
  • .MAP
  • And several others

Route files can also be downloaded from websites that provide these, including several top walking blogs, to add variety to your walks - Xpedition also allows for browsing routes other users have completed.
