Topographical Mapping Explained

A topographic map is a type of map characterized by large-scale detail, such as the representation of relief using contour lines and showing both natural and man-made features.

This type of mapping is much better for exploring the great outdoors, making it more enjoyable and easier for navigating in areas with little or no other recognizable landmarks, such as in the middle of a forest, field or up in the mountains, and for showing smaller details, such as trails. It is also much safer, especially for navigating in difficult weather conditions, such as sudden fog, rain or snow.
